Williamsburg Christian Academy Wins More Than $50,000 in lockers and scholarships in “Duralife Unlocker Challenge” National Video Competition on Inclusivity

Scranton Products has awarded Williamsburg Christian Academy (WCA) $50,000 in Duralife plastic lockers and $7,500 in scholarships as first prize in the Duralife Unlocker Challenge national video competition. Created by Scranton Products, a leading manufacturer of plastic toilet partitions and lockers, the video competition challenged students to think about inclusivity and diversity in their schools and everyday lives to produce a video entry. Through online voting open to the public, Williamsburg Christian Academy’s was part of the TOP 100 videos selected to be judged. The video was then selected from a judging panel as the winner from among 260 submissions nationally.

The competition’s theme, “Through the Locker Door,” asked students to explain why inclusivity is important to a more positive school environment and how it applies later in life. In producing their videos, students chose to expand the theme to include topics ranging from diversity and race relations to bullying and students with special needs.

Williamsburg Christian Academy serves students in pre-K through grade 12. Students at WCA created a video that looked literally “through the locker door” to demonstrate many aspects of inclusivity in a student’s life. The students used traditional videography as well as green screen technology and a drone to produce the winning video, which can be found online: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26eS0n1wfC4. Dr. Dianna Lindsay, head of the high school at Williamsburg Christian Academy, served as the adviser on the project.

“I am thrilled that our Leadership Class was able to create a national award winning video that braided together research, images, and a story that not only accurately addresses the mission of our school but that was also well received by the judges!” commented Lindsay.

Participating schools spanned every region of the country from coast-to-coast. In addition to Williamsburg Christian Academy, second place winner Canby High School, of Canby, Oregon, was given $10,000 worth of Duralife lockers and $5,000 in scholarships and St. Ann Catholic School, in West Palm Beach, Florida, was awarded $5,000 worth of Duralife lockers and $2,500 in scholarships for third place.

Scranton Products Kicks Off the “Duralife Unlocker Challenge” Video Competition Open to Schools Nationally to Win Lockers and Scholarships

Scranton Products, a leading manufacturer of school hallway and gym lockers, has launched “The Duralife Unlocker Challenge,” a national video competition open to high school and middle school students. The challenge gives students and their budget-strapped schools a chance to win up to $80,000 in exceptional quality Duralife hallway lockers as well as college scholarships. The program runs from January to March 2016, with details on how to submit the video at www.unlockerchallenge.com.

Beyond beautifying and upgrading their schools and providing funds for college, the competition has another lofty goal: students are asked to explore the theme of inclusivity in their original videos. Using the theme “Through the Locker Door,” the videos ask why inclusivity is important to a more positive school environment and how it applies later in life.

“We know the issues facing schools today,” said David Casal, Director of Sales Administration, Scranton Products. “The goal is to empower students to think inclusively, and help unlock their potential for collaboration, creativity and social interaction.”

In addition to creating an enriching team building experience for students, the Duralife Unlocker Challenge video competition provides schools with the opportunity to win free lockers and scholarships in three prize levels, including:
•1st Prize: $50,000 worth of lockers and $7,500 in scholarships
•2nd Prize: $10,000 worth of lockers and $5,000 in scholarships
•3rd Prize: $5,000 worth of lockers and $2,500 in scholarships

In January, student teams are encouraged to work with a teacher/adviser to begin planning and producing the video. The video file and required release forms can then be uploaded to the contest video submission page. Once the video is posted, the general public, including students, friends, family, and the school community can vote on the videos, which are then narrowed down to three finalists.

“We are committed to education and know that lockers are very personalized spaces for students,” adds Casal. “We are thrilled to be able to contribute Duralife lockers and scholarship funds to the winners, as well as help spread the inclusivity message throughout schools nationwide.”

Scranton Products Sponsors New Online Course On Strong, Sustainable Materials For K – 12 Lockers

Scranton Products Sponsors New Online Course On Strong, Sustainable Materials For K – 12 Lockers

Scranton Products, in conjunction with Architectural Record Magazine’s Continuing Education program, is sponsoring a CEU course entitled “The Strong and Sustainable Solution for K – 12 Lockers.” The course is designed to help architects, designers and school officials satisfy durability demands and sustainability criteria in school corridors and locker rooms. Scranton Products leads the industry as a manufacturer of plastic bathroom partitions and lockers.

The course information compares the durability of traditional metal lockers with the durability of lockers made from high density polyethylene (HDPE). It also describes the difference between post-industrial recycled content and post-consumer recycled content and summarizes the contents of a Health Product Declaration (HPD) stating what an HDPE product may contain. Additionally, it helps explain the contribution that HDPE lockers can make toward earning different green building certifications such as LEED™ and CHPS, which is very important to today’s school construction projects.

This course was approved by the GBCI for 1 GBCI CE hour(s) for LEED Credential Maintenance. Information for “The Strong and Sustainable Solution for K – 12 Lockers” course can be found in a four-page article on the Architectural Record Continuing Education website, which culminates in an online test in order to earn the CEU Credit. Visit http://continuingeducation.construction.com/article.php?L=330&C=1277 to access the article and test.

Recognizing that continuing education is crucial for architects to stay ahead in their professions, Scranton Products has developed online and live courses on key industry topics that help fulfill membership requirements for HSW/ GBCI, Accessibility, ADA, and Barrier Free CE requirements. All courses are available at https://www.scrantonproducts.com/continuing-education-courses/.

New Jersey Architect Wins Scranton Products’ Big Easy Sweepstakes with a Grand Prize Trip to the Greenbuild Show in New Orleans

Scranton, PA – Scranton Products, a leading manufacturer of lockers and bathroom partitions, has awarded Tim “T.J.” Margolin,  AIA, LEED AP, of Design Resources Group  (DRG) Architects in Piscataway, NJ, with the “The Big Easy Sweepstakes” Grand Prize trip to the Greenbuild Show in New Orleans, LA. The show, which highlights sustainable building, is held from October 22–24, 2014.  A resident of Bound Brook, NJ, this is Margolin’s first Greenbuild Show and trip to New Orleans and he said he is excited to attend.  “This is a chance to investigate the latest green and sustainable products and technologies, so that we can share these innovations with our customers,” he said.

Margolin entered the sweepstakes by specifying Scranton Products’ latest locker product, Duralife Lockers for the PS 316 elementary school in Queens, NY.  “I was already familiar with Scranton Products’ HDPE bathroom partitions, but the Duralife Lockers are another way to provide schools with lower maintenance over metal and reduce the spread of bacteria,” he said.

Margolin’s firm specializes in innovative sustainable designs for educational and athletic facilities, so Duralife Lockers are a great fit.  DRG has several LEED professionals and recently achieved a LEED Silver for a school in Philipsburg, NJ.  In the school environment where transferrable illness is more of a concern than ever, HDPE is naturally resistant to bacteria, odors, mold and mildew and the non-porous surface is very easy to clean. Graffiti wipes off easily with most non-abrasive cleaners and stickers and contact paper are easily removed. The lockers can also be power washed and steam cleaned without the worry of rust.
