Craft, Character, and Crowd-Readiness at Starr Hill Brewery

Located inside the newly developed Capital One Center in Tysons, Virginia, Starr Hill Brewery blends live music, craft food and beer, and a layered industrial-meets-hospitality design into an inviting multi-level destination. With a rooftop beer garden already attracting large crowds in Richmond, Starr Hill saw the opportunity for an all-season venue that could deliver the same vibrant experience with a full kitchen and live music stage.

Architecture Incorporated took on the project, transforming a raw retail shell into a two-story restaurant and music venue with mezzanine seating, dual bars, and curated lighting that sets the mood from the dining floor to the restroom.

“We balanced industrial elements like polished concrete and metal accents with warm wood tones, rich lighting, and pops of their signature red,” said Jonathan Handel, Senior Project Manager at Architecture Incorporated. “We wanted to keep the space energetic while including design elements that nod to the craftsmanship of brewing beer.”

Where There’s Beer, There’d Better Be Bathrooms

Given the expected guest volume—ranging from 2,500 to over 3,500 people daily—Starr Hill’s Director of Operations, Brian Griffin, knew that every element had to stand up to heavy use. Nowhere was that more important than the restrooms, which needed to be clean, durable, and easy to maintain.

“The main issue was just durability,” said Griffin. “We wanted something that wasn’t going to fall over or need to be replaced in the near future.”

The design team selected Scranton Products® Hiny Hiders® partitions for both the men’s and women’s restrooms, featuring four stalls in each and an added urinal screen in the men’s room. The Bronze color in Rotary Brushed texture played nicely into the warm industrial ambiance. Braced overhead to support streamlined cleaning, the partitions deliver the form and functionality the brewery needs:

Challenges and Results

One of the biggest design challenges was accommodating ADA requirements within a limited footprint. The team needed to ensure proper clearances at every turn, while still maximizing space for revenue-generating areas like the dining room and stage.

“It was a bit of a jigsaw puzzle, but it came together nicely,” said Handel.

The finished venue delivers on its vision to be a welcoming space to see live music, watch sports, and enjoy an artistic environment. The stage and projection screen keep the space versatile, perfect for band visuals or showing regional sports on the big screen.

“We try to appeal to a really diverse audience,” said Griffin. “Music lovers, families, people in the area who want something vibrant.”
